Introduction

The CTO / Lead Platform Engineer leads the technological foundation and software architecture powering GYSJ. This role is responsible for maintaining our production tech stack, managing server infrastructure, and continuously building and enhancing the author dashboards, peer review portals, and workflow automations that keep our publishing operations moving seamlessly.

Your role and responsibilities

• Assists with maintaining and evolving the production web tech stack (PHP, MySQL, Vanilla JavaScript, CSS, RESTful APIs) • Manages web server environments, Linux configurations, Cloudflare integrations (R2 object storage, Turnstile, CDN caching), and automated database backups • Updates, optimizes, and designs intuitive author dashboards, reviewer workspaces, editorial consoles, and admin tooling • Engineers mission-critical workflow automations (manuscript routing, automated notifications, milestone reminders, review tracking) • Monitors platform security, optimizes database schemas and queries, troubleshoots system issues, and ensures high platform reliability and uptime

Minimum Requirements

• Strong command of backend development in PHP (PDO, OOP, MVC principles) and relational database design in MySQL • Experience with vanilla modern JavaScript, HTML5/CSS3, responsive UI design, and asynchronous AJAX interactions • Practical understanding of server management, Linux environment, web servers (Apache/Nginx), and version control (Git) • Passion for building fast, intuitive, and reliable tools for authors, editors, and volunteers • Ability to commit 4–6 hours per week

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with cloud object storage (Cloudflare R2, AWS S3) and CDN architectures • Familiarity with academic publishing formats and schemas (DOI generation, Crossref metadata, JATS XML, OAI-PMH) • Contributions to open-source software or experience building custom CMS / submission management platforms
