A transparent, constructive, single-blind peer review framework providing middle school, high school, and undergraduate researchers with scholarly mentorship and rigorous academic evaluation.
Evaluated by qualified reviewers
100% free open-access publishing
Domain-focused evaluation
Thorough, mentor-guided feedback
At the Global Youth Science Journal (GYSJ), we uphold the highest academic integrity standards while providing an encouraging, educational platform for pre-college and undergraduate researchers publishing their foundational scientific papers.
The Global Youth Science Journal maintains clear academic standards for all submissions. Every manuscript is examined for hypothesis clarity, experimental controls, data consistency, and ethical reporting.
To assist emerging researchers, educators, and mentors in navigating the scientific publishing ecosystem, here is how legitimate peer-reviewed academic publishing differs from non-selective or commercial vanity outlets:
| Feature | Legitimate Peer-Reviewed Journals (e.g., GYSJ) | Unselective & Vanity Outlets |
|---|---|---|
| Review Process | Thorough independent review with constructive critique and revision cycles | Instantaneous or superficial acceptance with no substantive critique |
| Author Publishing Fees | $0 mandatory fees; publishing open access is completely free of charge | Mandatory exorbitant fees ($200 to $2,500+) charged directly to publish |
| Educational Value | Actionable feedback aimed at developing the student's scientific inquiry | None; commercial transaction without academic or mentoring dialogue |
| Archiving & DOIs | Permanent registered DOIs (Zenodo/Crossref) and repository indexing | Fragile or unverified web links without persistent repository archiving |
| Editorial Governance | Guided by Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) standards and editorial oversight | Opaque or non-existent editorial board, prioritized by revenue generation |
Participating in peer-reviewed scientific publishing provides emerging researchers with first-hand experience in the scholarly inquiry cycle. Engaging in the review process helps students develop scientific resilience, understand evidence-based critique, and communicate findings clearly to the wider academic community.
In an academic curriculum vitae (CV), resume, or portfolio, cite your published work using standard bibliographic conventions:
Author(s). (Year). "Title of Article". Global Youth Science Journal, Vol. X, Issue Y. https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.XXXXXXX
Every manuscript submitted to GYSJ follows a structured, transparent journey designed to ensure fair evaluation and constructive growth for student researchers:
The editorial desk reviews the manuscript for fit within journal scope, basic formatting alignment, completeness of data, and textual originality through automated similarity screening. If structural revisions or citation corrections are necessary, editors provide initial guidance before formal peer review begins.
The manuscript is routed to a Section Editor from our Editorial Board with domain familiarity (e.g., Computer Science, Biomedical Sciences, Environmental Studies, Physics). The editor coordinates evaluation with independent peer reviewers from our global academic network and qualified research volunteers who possess relevant subject expertise and no conflicts of interest.
Reviewers evaluate the paper against standardized criteria: hypothesis clarity, methodology soundness, controls, data presentation, discussion of limitations, and contribution. Reviewers compile detailed, actionable commentary and submit their evaluations to the editor.
The Section Editor synthesizes the independent reviewer reports and delivers a formal editorial decision: Acceptance, Minor Revisions, Major Revisions, or Decline / Resubmission Encouraged. Authors receive the consolidated feedback directly in their author dashboard.
When revisions are requested, authors submit an updated manuscript alongside a point-by-point response explaining how each comment was addressed. The editor verifies that reviewer concerns have been thoroughly and appropriately resolved.
Accepted papers undergo copyediting, layout typesetting, and registered DOI assignment via Zenodo/Crossref under our Digital Archiving Policy. The article is published open-access in our Journal Issues, and metadata is distributed via our OAI-PMH Gateway for worldwide academic indexing and discovery.
Peer review at GYSJ is conceived as a constructive dialogue between emerging researchers and academic reviewers. Our editorial process is guided by four foundational principles:
Reviewers provide encouraging, actionable critique to guide students in refining their methods and argumentation.
Conclusions must be soundly anchored in reproducible data, verifiable controls, and proper statistical analysis.
Editors and reviewers strive to maintain clear communication and timely evaluation milestones so authors can progress steadily.
Every paper is judged strictly on scientific merit and originality, regardless of the student's geographic origin or background.
GYSJ employs a strict Single-Blind Peer Review model. In this framework, the reviewers know the author's name and school affiliation, but the identity of the peer reviewers remains strictly confidential to the authors.
Reviewers evaluate submissions against five standardized, weighted dimensions:
Does the manuscript articulate a clear, testable research question? Does it identify a genuine knowledge gap or present a novel application of existing scientific methods?
Are procedures, apparatus, controls, sample sizes, and algorithms described in sufficient detail for another researcher to reproduce the findings independently?
Are data presented with appropriate statistical measures (p-values, error bars, sample sizes)? Are figures, diagrams, and tables clearly titled and annotated?
Do the authors objectively analyze the boundaries of their conclusions? Are limitations, confounding variables, and proposed future research directions transparently discussed?
Does the manuscript adhere to Chicago citation rules with working DOIs? Are all AI tool contributions declared in Acknowledgments per COPE guidelines?
Following peer evaluation, the Section Editor evaluates reviewer recommendations and issues one of four standard editorial determinations:
The manuscript satisfies all methodological and scientific quality standards without requiring substantive revisions. Editorial staff proceed with copyediting and layout formatting.
The core research is scientifically sound, but requires minor revisions—such as clarifying specific explanations, improving figure readability, or expanding references.
The submission presents a promising question but requires substantive improvements—such as additional control data, deeper statistical analysis, or a revised discussion. Authors may revise and resubmit for re-evaluation.
The manuscript does not currently meet standard methodological criteria, lacks sufficient empirical data, or falls outside journal scope. Detailed reviewer feedback is provided to assist future work.
GYSJ provides two administrative review tracks to accommodate different author timelines:
The default, fully free publishing pathway for young researchers worldwide. Managed by our volunteer academic board and mentors.
An optional priority track for authors facing specific calendar constraints (e.g., upcoming conference presentations or institutional deadlines).
Expedited handling coordinates scheduling only—it has zero impact on peer review evaluations or editorial decisions. GYSJ maintains strict separation between review scheduling and editorial judgment. Manuscript acceptance is never guaranteed or sold. All submissions on both tracks are held to the exact same criteria of scientific validity, methodology, and ethical conduct.
Scientific integrity is the cornerstone of scholarly inquiry. GYSJ expects all contributing authors to adhere to established ethical standards:
