A partnership connecting young artists, researchers, and healthcare initiatives
The Global Youth Science Journal is pleased to announce a developing partnership with ArtsNest, an organisation dedicated to using creativity as a way to support healthcare and bring communities together.
The collaboration began with a shared interest in connecting the worlds of science, healthcare, and visual creativity. Through the partnership, young artists associated with ArtsNest will have opportunities to contribute illustrations and other visual work to healthcare and health-sciences research published through GYSJ.
For both organisations, the idea is straightforward: science does not exist in isolation. Communicating scientific ideas effectively can involve creativity, visual storytelling, and perspectives that extend beyond traditional academic writing.
About ArtsNest ArtsNest is a youth-led nonprofit founded by Bay Area high school students Alyssa Liu and Hailey Seto. The organisation was created around a specific gap: motivated young people often face age restrictions, geographic barriers, and financial limitations that prevent them from engaging in traditional healthcare volunteering. Its overarching mission is to build a network that connects communities to healthcare through art.
ArtsNest operates multiple initiatives spanning patient support, accessible arts education, youth leadership, and healthcare fundraising. Key community programmes include:
- Creative Patient Support: Volunteers provide in-person arts and crafts for pediatric inpatients to encourage sensory experience and creative expression. Additionally, a global card-making initiative has delivered over 1,600 unique, volunteer-designed cards to healthcare settings.
- Accessible Arts Education: The organisation offers free online art lessons, delivering over 60 hours of instruction to hundreds of students regardless of a family's ability to pay or geographic location.
- Health Education Publications: In the past three months alone, youth artists and writers have produced over 30 comic and blog publications. These initiatives explore medicine, psychology, wellness, and creativity, aiming to make complex health information more approachable.
Today, ArtsNest has grown into an international youth volunteer network, engaging more than 1,200 volunteers across approximately 50 countries. This global reach is sustained by a network of over 20 active chapters, which allow young leaders to organise local service, partnerships, and fundraising within their own communities.
A collaboration built around young people
The partnership with GYSJ creates another avenue for young people to contribute to science.
Through the proposed collaboration, ArtsNest volunteers and participants can create visual illustrations for healthcare and health-sciences research published by GYSJ. Rather than treating scientific research as something that only exists within academic papers, the initiative explores how visual communication can make research more engaging and accessible.
This approach also reflects the broader work already being undertaken by ArtsNest, where young people use art to communicate health concepts and support patients. Ultimately, it aligns with ArtsNest's vision to help young people become sustained contributors to healthcare and community well-being while developing into the next generation of service-oriented leaders.
Beyond illustrations
The partnership is also intended to extend beyond individual research illustrations.
ArtsNest has proposed contributing an article to GYSJ focusing on its organisation, healthcare-related initiatives, and free art programming. This piece will also highlight their expanding growth strategy, which includes developing tailored patient care packages and coordinating directly with underserved healthcare facilities to fund and deliver locally identified medical supplies. Furthermore, ArtsNest plans to format its youth-created healthcare comics into professionally printed educational brochures for broad distribution in community spaces.
For GYSJ, collaborations such as this are part of a broader effort to expose young people to interdisciplinary approaches to science. Healthcare and scientific research can benefit from perspectives in design, communication, art, education, and community engagement — particularly when those perspectives help young people participate directly.
Looking ahead
The ArtsNest × GYSJ partnership represents an opportunity to connect two communities with different but complementary strengths: young researchers communicating science and young artists using creativity to contribute to healthcare.
As the collaboration develops, both organisations will explore opportunities for further creative and educational projects. This aligns seamlessly with ArtsNest's long-term goal to build a global, youth-led infrastructure where creative service is an accessible, meaningful way for young people to strengthen healthcare communities worldwide.
At its core, the partnership asks a simple question: What happens when young people are given the opportunity to use both science and creativity to make a difference? This collaboration aims to find out.
